M116 question

I'm curious about this engine for a possible swap into my stupid time machine.

How much does it weigh
What #'s does it put out
Dimensions?
How much for a decent one?

I'm just seeing what my options are for power in the car. Heh, maybe a M117 will fit

Which, M116, the cast iron 3.5 or the light alloy 3.8 or 4.2? The M117 is about an inch taller and a just about that much wider, so fitment should be equally troublesome (The 4.5, 5.0 and 5.6 motors were all M117's).

Yours is a W123? Any of them will fit, but the light alloy ones will fit better. There's a thread around here someplace from fellow that did it and spent a long time working out the details of the wire harness to make it a pretty, seamless looking installation.

Hey buddy, that PRV v6 that came in the Deloren is a pretty sweet motor. I had one in a Volvo wagon and loved it. They suffered problems with the cam oiling if the oil was not changed often enough and other minor problems but it is a very torquey motor and will accept some modifications without stress.

I had about 130K, with no problems, on mine when my Mrs. pulled out in front of a very large american car and got the left front bent over to the right. I did follow a rigorous oil change regimen though of every 2K iirc, but the oil thirty years ago was not nearly as good as what we have now.

The bottom end is built like a Cosworth Indy racing motor with a full girdle on the main bearing caps. It was the basis of the ground shaking Renault F1 Turbo motors which produced well over 1000 hp in qualifying trim.

Putting something heavy in there will ruin the nice balance of your car which has the engine out back like a Porche 911, right?

There has to be plenty of them available in the salvage yards. Putting in a non original motor will involve a tremendous amount of work and money. I would find the latest version of it and get a good one and go for it.

Its an oddfire v6 and when you push it it gives off a growly moan that is just very very nice to listen to.

Then use the later alloy ones. Any 80+ benz motor. 380 and 500 cars appear often enough to give you a decent supply of under 1,000$ donors.

The price of scrap has dropped from a high of 10cents/pound for a car down to about a penny. It's a buyers market for a dead car.

I am not aware that any of them had cast iron blocks. They are aluminum blocks with iron or steel sleeves, IIRC.

The 4.2 M116 has 201 BHP and 234 lb/ft torque. Plenty of power to haul a time machine.
