catalytic converter sounds like a bucket of bolts!

My wife came home and said that something seemed to be loose or dragging under her car. I went out looked under it...nothing...jacked it up and looked...nothing. Started it up and noise for days! It was coming from the converter. Made sure that it was internal and not external to it. So, couple of questions:

1) Will driving for a little while hurt the car?
2) Is it an expensive fix?
3) How much beer should I drink before I call around for a quote?

Thanks for your help everyone!

The inside of the cat is a honeycomb material that breaks down over time. I certainly won't pass inspection, and it certainly won't run optimally like that, but it won't "hurt" it to do so. Normal cats run $200-$300 then installation on top of that - I don't know exactly what a 190E cat costs, but I'd guess you'll need $400-$500 to get a new one on.

Thanks for the info! So I guess we're looking at a 3 to 4 beer range, huh? I'll let you know what I find out and thanks again!
