Smile Does a 1985 380SE need pollution pump belt on? Help!!

I purchased a 1985 380SE, I drove it home which was over 300kms, upon close inspection found it did not have a belt to run the pollution pump, when I put one on after 15 to 20 minutes of running it won't idle at all, help!! can the car be driven without this belt or will it cause some sort of damage in the long run?
