Low coolant lamp when going up my steep driveway....

That's what I was trying to express...

Put a quart in the clear tank and drive the car, let it cool down: if the level returns to the 1/2 way mark, put another quart in...

Eventually the level in the tank will rise, probably when the actual radiator is full, eh?
