400e Problems ; Please help!

Ok, my starter recently went out, and I replaced (what a beast THAT was!)
I also replaced the starter/alternator wiring harness while I was down there since it was corroded.

Now, the abs light is on, the cruise control does not work, and the car when accelerated to top speed will die out as soon as it hits 4500 or so rpm.

Please advise what i can do to fix this ?

I am almost positive the engine wiring harness has been replaced, new battery, new plugs/wires etc

I would recheck my work with the starter/alternator, especially the harness job, if the problems started when it was replaced.

Yup will do , again.

But I remember reading something associated with the ABS light and cruise control issue...not to mention the loss of power at high rpms

Next step is to read the fault codes - try a search.

I tried to search for this, but most anyhitn came up was about a OVP sensor...and the 400e does not have OVP...

So where does that leave me ? lol

And what fault codes do you speak of ?

How do i find/get them exactly..what is it I should search for ?

I don't think your's has the LED and button combo, for easy base code reading.

First, I would check all of the fuses....make sure there are no hairline cracks in them...turn them when in doubt. They can crack from one moment to the next, even while you are driving.

See if you got any of the front wheel sensors dirty while you where down there. Debris and metallic items can mess things up.

Jim's site can be very useful, as far as codes go - lot's of info there http://www.k6jrf.com/MB_S500.html

When I replaced my starter, I can remember that I was too lazy to disconnect the battery because I didn't want to have to reset the CD player code; so, I remember one of the hot wires on the starter hitting a ground and sparking all over the place. I was thinking that I was lucky I got away without any damage.

Do you think you could have shorted something out when you replaced the starter? There are a few AC Delco fuses in the base module. I don't know if they would cause your problem, but it's cheap to replace them. They are right under the black lid where it says "battery in trunk."

Emerydc8 - Thanks for the advice, I will look there. However, I did make sure my battery was disconnected before the starter replacement.

Larry - Thanks for the advice and that link.
if my car does not have the easy base code reading..im assuing it needs ot be done that hard way..lol
But since I dont know either way, if its something I can do, can you please explain how I can check for codes ?
Or will i need to bring it to a dealer to read?

Your car does have built in pushbutton code reader but it's on an ancillary 8 pin diagnostic connector, not on the 38 pin. But you're going to need to build the code reader anyway to get all the codes. Try a search - lots of info in the archives, also this - http://www.k6jrf.com/MB_X11.html

I believe the PCM will prevent the cruise control module to be engage as long as the ABS concern exist. Same thing with the traction control. it gets disengage when the ABS system has a fault.
