85 500 sel will not start.

OK, my first MB. But I am a fair shadetree mechanic. After much researching of these very helpful forums, I can say I have fuel flow, I have spark. It cranks very well, but will not run.
To be specific, I can loosen a fuel rail and I get gas leaking out. I have even sprayed starting fluid into the intake.
I have spark, I tested the coil, and it had very high resistance across the primary coil, and color of spark went from pale yellow to bright blue, and will arc across an inch of gap.
I have replaced the cap and rotor, and have even tried rotating the distributor as I crank it over to see if I can get any bang, no change.
I am really puzzled, and I don't want to just throw parts at it and hope to get lucky.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for any help.

Mike
