I'm in the middle of this, decided to replace the motor as the brushes are almost gone, the commutator is seriously worn down, and the bearings are not freeing up with lubricant. Fans come off easily with the smallest 3 jaw puller that Autozone will lend to you ($30 deposit). If your wiling to spend an additional ~$150 you can get motor with fan blades and simply R&R.
