Cheap oil can cause all sorts of problems. Change the oil a few times ahead of schedule, always with the stuff that has the right service level specification (don't bother with synthetics for this).

Resist all temptations to use a motor flush.

If somebody suggests a couple of quarts of ATF, that's OK.

iamjlira, I'm surprised the tech would drive the car with overheating issues. It would have made more sense to replace the thermostat before doing any sort of road test. Be prepared for sticker shock when you hear the cost of a replacement instrument cluster. Proceed with caution. This 1992 500SL could turn into a real money pit.

Caution my friend.

There has never been a cheap Mercedes.

A cheap Mercedes-Benz, can become the the most expensive hole that you throw your hard earned money into.

Look at others before you buy it.

I bought my first Rolex when I was Twenty for $60 at a Pawn shop. I promptly to it to the jewelers to be cleaned lubed and adjusted, it also needed a new bezel. I went to pick it up and the bill was $300. I paid $375 for my second Rolex (Explorer II)I've had it Twenty years and its Forty years old. Last time I had it serviced it was $800. I just paid $5199.50 For a 1992 500SL before I wrote the check I was in for $500 for the tow, inspection, thermostat, flush and fill, lube and oil. I guess my point being I realize just because it's cheap to buy doesn't mean it going to be inexpensive to own. The car was given a clean bill of health and I think I just got another smokin deal.

I got a little back round on the car. It was a trade and the dealer put some money it to it for a new windshield and the soft top control module. It was listed for 17K didn't sell and dropped 14K didn't sell winter came and it went inside and sat and I guess didn't come back out. I got the car fax three previous owners came from Florida. In the last two years only three people have looked at it. I made that 5K offer because I thought they wouldn't even consider it. I know sight unseen it's sounds to good to be true. The Sales Manager had to call the lot owner to approve the sale to take the loss. I was told about 11K. The fact it didn't run worked in my favor. Could be BS I don't know but I got a Bass Ass car for $5199.50 . I would venture to guess if you saw this car (I'll post some pictures) not mint but very nice 3 out of 5 with your knowledge of the line would have jumped all over it. I'm a firm believer buy your snow blower in the summer and your motorcycle("05" Electra Glide Classic) in the winter and it never hurts to ask.

Thank you for all your advice and consideration. Now it's time to get to work!

Paid $9000 for an immaculate 91 last June with 79,300 miles...same color as this one in and out..Lorinser wheels...needed some AC work...around $1000 but otherwise ran fine..no soft top issues...they can be pricey....hydraulic valve problems not uncommon...but a bear to diagnose.

We've bought 6 new cars from Olsen dealerships in Omaha, and one new MB from the Omaha MB dealer. If that car has been driven any amount of years in the winter salt of Omaha, it's got rust. All our MBs rusted out after several years there. Good luck!

Wow, that car really does look amazing...I'd say you got a good deal! Did you fix the overheating problem?

Makes me wonder why the dealer would not just have fixed the problems and then gotten his money out of a trouble free car rather than sell it cheap.

Ah, your from Omaha, a great City! I miss being there. Odd that Stan Olsen would have that car at all. My 1994 c280 was driven in the Omaha metro from 1994 to 2005 and has been in Tucson since but doesnt have a spot of rust on her. It has been garaged every day and I have taken good care of her; she still looks like brand new. Proof that cars in the midwest can stay rust free, it really depends on how you take care of it (my friends in the buagaha benz boys group know what I mean) and yours may be the same (i hope!)

The CARFAX showed the SL spent time in Iowa, Nebraska......then sitting 4-years as the dealership's car.

Joel, you've got yourself an interesting car for only $5,199.50, I must say.

He said he took it to a MB shop. That could be a dealer or an independent.

it's hard for me to believe the MB "Dealer" in Omaha would let a car out of their shop for only $199 after performing any tests. It would be more reasonable to assume the fees are from an independant shop.

I took the car to Star Class on a referral. The tech Mark has been very generous with his knowledge. Speaking of which I need an owners manual. All I got with the car are the exploded diagrams and schematics. I need SL 101
