W124 mirror in a W126. I like it!
Man, is it just me or are all those old 126 rear view mirrors suffering from the same busted out plastic housing? I was about to give up looking. I bought a mirror off an old 300D (W124) and it is built much more solidly and it fits right in the socket of my W126. The mounting is almost identical, and it snaps right into place. The only difference is the 124 mirror's footprint on the roof is slightly smaller and leaves a tiny bit of the metal mount exposed on the windshield side, but this is not visible from the interior, and falls well into the realm of "fuggit".
The mirror looks better than the 126 mirror, is the same size, is much more solid, and sits almost an inch closer to the ceiling than the original. This suits me great because I am quite tall and this helps get the mirror out of my line of forward sight. It seems to even have a better field of view for me as well.
If you're sick of trying to find a 126 mirror that isn't all busted out, try the 124 mirror. It worked great for me. The best part is, there are no tools required, it just pops into place. If you don't like it, going back is easy.
