W124 722.317 transmission
so the trans in my diesel 124 is slipping at high revs, its probably
ready for a re-build. I bought a used trans with "unknown" miles but car ran and drove ( no further data on trans condition ) I got the trans cheap enough with the plan of re-building it and swapping it out for mine and winding up with a spare trans core that I can use down the road for the W107 car. anyway, after looking closely at it it just seems way too "clean" to be pulled right out of a 250K plus car, which makes me think it may have been recently been re-built ( the guy at the yard, says he did not clean this trans ) I know this is a long shot, but is there a quick way of checking the internal condition of this trans, without taking it too far apart ? or do I swap this one into the car to check its condition hope for the best, and plan to rebuild the original trans ? I guess the only issue is if this new trans is worse then the unit in the car right now, I have to perform an extra trans swap. thoughts ? and does anyone have an opinion of the ATSG manuals as a rebuild guide ? I have re-built auto trannys before, just not MB

i hope that is still a good site i copied it to paper and i also do trans work - its not that bad just dont mix the shims in the rear of the unit that has to come apart for a snap ring to remove gear set -- also at the bottom of both drums their are riverted plates that have O rings sealing them a kit is supplied with 10/32 screws to drill the riverts out and tap the holes it comes with instructions, if you dont replace them it might slide around going into gear -- also the downshift cable ( boden cable ) is when it shifts and the modulator is how firm -- 200 bucks for the kit with out bands they are 300 each but are good for life in most units -- one of the servos is a push to remove the other can take the tip of your finger off if not carefull -- let me know if you need any other info - jz |

Call around to find a transmission shop with a trans dyno. They will likely load and run the transmission to be sure it is sound for a reasonable fee. The only way to tell IMO.

I am in the middle of a 722.315 rebuild and am assessing 2 parts trannies I have (need a front pump- anyone?).
The ATSG manual is OK- just OK. You need a copy of the MB shop manual as well. Johnjzjz- that link doesn't work- what were you trying to say? I have the K1 and K2 apart and need to buy that seal kit johnjzjz is talking about- anybody know of any good savvy MB tranny parts guys? I only know of Jaggi.. Lets all keep in touch Rick
