M103 Head Gasket Parts List

Okay, so I am getting ready to pull my head to fix that blasted oil leak.

I want to put together as complete a parts list as possible to minimize my downtime (driving a Volare).

If any of you have done this job and you figured out halfway through that you really should have bought a _____ , please post it here!

Here's my list so far:

1) Head gasket repair kit
2) Head bolts and a 12 point socket for them
3) Valve guides, springs, seals
4) Front timing cover seal + The loctite stuff
5) Possible timing chain guides (input appreciated)

What am I missing here?

Here:

- By-pass hose (from water pump to head).
- All the rubber hoses that touch the head/block. They will be hard as a rock, if originals.
- A breaker bar. You will need it for the two 90 degree head bolt adjustments.
Also, a good time to change the serpentine belt, belt tensioner shock, thermostat, etc.

Buy the Victor Reinz Head Gasket "Set". It has all the gaskets you will need for the job including that front timing cover gasket. I was very happy with my kit.

Check the hose that goes from the back of the head to the heater...usually that is cracked from the underneath. I actually just cut the end off mine and plugged it back in...there should be enough slack to do that.

You do not need to take off the intake side with the head!!! Leave it all alone...just unplug the sensors that attach to the head, unbolt and push it aside. It saved me a TON of time and hassle. I wouldn't even want to think about doing all the vacuum connections and leads had I taken that off with the head.

You may need to get creative for a bolt that goes through the middle of the timing chain sprocket. I forgot the name, but its in the link below midway through. I used a bolt and a nut to get it off.

Idle valve hoses, have you ever replaced the throttle body boot? Injector seals? All that stuff is easy and perfect time while it's apart. Fan clutch bearing.

If you pull the front cover for a new front main, yes I'd replace the tensioner rail and the driver guides. They're cheap enough. Chain is cheap enough if you feel the need as is the tensioner.

Fan clutch if questionable, same with radiator. Any heater/coolant lines. Fan belt. Plugs (BP5EFS NGK or the Bosch ones)

Gut the precats if your car has them.

All I can think of, it's pretty straightforward.

The MB procedure recommends using an engine crane to remove the head and manifolds. Two valves will be open so set the head on two pieces of 1X3's. Remeber to set your engine at TDC so everything will align properly. You will need an internal star tool for the head bolts which are available at Autozone in a three pack and you will need to remove the pin holding the drivers side chain rail. get the MB specified sealant. There are lots of posts about this.

Don't be afraid when the head bolts make groaning sounds when you loosen them, they will be tight. Set the hood vertically as well.

Why not just loosen the rockers enough to close the valves? I did that on the spare head I got in the junk yard. About 90min to pull only.

If you do the rails, you should change the seal on the timing chain cover.

The seal for the timing chain cover? I got mine from ******** az and it did not have that seal. Got it at the dealership.
Maybe you are thinking about the valve cover gasket?

Have the head checked to see if it needs skimming. My mechanic says he's yet to work on one that didn't.

Well, I bit the bullet today and shelled out about $250 for parts to get this project going.


I got:

1) Victor-reinz head gasket kit. (includes timing seal and intake/exhaust gaskets)
2) Valve guides
3) Valve seals
4) Timing chain, and guides.
5) Bolts and washers.

I wanted to get more things, like fan clutch and air pump pulleys, but my money is getting low these days and I figured I'll just wait until I get the thing apart before making my second parts list.

Of course, when I do this job I will document it and take pictures to share here......

There are plenty of other users' posts and pictures on this subject.


I actually CANCELED my order for the parts this weekend. I had a couple reasons. The first reason is that I can't be 100% sure that it's not just the valve cover gasket because of where it is leaking. So I am going to try the $5 fix first before I plunk down the big $$. Even though oil is puddling up at the lip where the head meets the block, there is a bad valve cover gasket spot right over it. I am just going to cross my fingers for now....

Be prepared because there is always something extra to fix when you actually have the head off

Are you going to clean the tops of the pistons? I suggest also getting a couple big cans of degreaser and replacing all the hoses that are difficult to replace such as the waterpump->head...that small 3/4inch one.
