W140 Air Condition Compressor Question
Would anyone happen to know what can cause a "click" noise about every minute coming from the air condition compressor on a W140 chassis / M104.990 engine? Would this happen to be the air condition compressor clutch? Is this part changeable w/out having to remove the air condition compressor & discharge the refrigerant? Thanks.

The clicking can be caused by the clutch pulling in and dropping out. Does the clicking happen the same time the clutch cycles? Watch the front of the compressor. You should be able to watch the clutch and time it. Whay makes you think it needs to be removed? My suggestion would be to get some gauges and see what your pressures are. It may just be a little low on freon.

Jim, thanks for the reply. Checked pressure readings and they were at idle at about 80F ambient temperature, low pressure side = 41psi & high pressure side = just under 200psi. I understand that for R134a it should read between 225-250psi on high side, and max. at 41 psi for low side. The dryer spy glass had some bubbles showing but also consistent refrigerant w/out any bubbles. Am informed that the bubble glass is not the most accurate reading.
You are correct that the clicking is the electric clutch on the front of the compressor. The auxilliary fans do seem to go on when the A/C is on (as usual). Thank you. Last edited by dbmoylan; 02-17-2009 at 08:45 AM. |
