Not sure exactly what the question is but it's a fuel injected 4.5 liter from a mid-70s 116 chassis, 450SE or 450SEL, the 53,713th one of its type.

Engine Type
Thank you all for your replies. What I am trying to establish is if this engine is an aluminum block 5.0 common to all Mercedes 126 V8 models 1980 to 1991 that start with engine number 117961, 963, ... etc. OR the old 116 model iron block 4.5 liter installed in the 450 series 116 Mercedes cars that would have engine number starting with 116XXXXX?.

?? See the engine number you gave us. If it's a 117, it can't be a 116 too. There never was a 4.5 liter 116 motor - just 3.5, 3.8 and 4.2.

M117-> its either a 450 (or 350, if your talking about an early 107) (W116 cars) or a 560 (W126 cars) not a 380 or 420 (M116). Period.
You say its in a W126, is it possible that the vehicle ever has an engine swap? The information deanyl provided is compelling. Do you have any pictures of the engine/car? Engine pics would make ID extremely easy for all of us. Either way, the M117 is better then the M116, in my opinion, Im a little partial though, double time chain. Ill do you on better, Does it look like this. . . Or like this. . . Both of these engines are M117's. The first engine is mine, in my '78 450 SL-C. The second engine is from a '89 560 SEC (W126).

Lexxani:
Engine looks like the second photo; it has the same type of aluminum finned (ribbed) valve covers. Russian decoder says car is an "end of model" car year 1980. So I'm trying to determine if this engine is the aluminum block 5 liter 240HP euro (205 HP U.S.) so I can use it in a transplant for more HP than the 4.5 liter V8 commonly found in the U.S. model 450SEL that only has 180HP. What is confusing is that a 117986.. engine could just be the U.S. iron block 4.5 engine but I am not sure. |

Try a magnet on the block perhaps...?
