I rebuilt my 190D 722.4 with all new soft parts a couple of years ago. I used regular ATF for the initial fill, then changed it to Mobil 1 ATF after a couple of thousand miles (wanted to get any break-in debris out and didn't want to waste all the $$ on the synth ATF for that first change... also I've heard that some parts may not wear in properly on synthetic lubes but I think that's probably a myth).
I guess I've got 20k miles or so on the transmission with synthetic, it feels exactly the same as the day I changed the fluid... which felt exactly the same as the day BEFORE I changed the fluid. I'm in favor of it.

I have synthetic in all of our transmissions.....all the MB's and the non-MB's as well. They all like it just fine. I use the Valvoline Synthetic Dexron VI in the MB's.....
