Transmission fluid choices
89 300E 722.358 If I remember correctly.
Planning on changing the ATFfilter. Recall someone saying Mobil 1 ATF has changed and I was planning on going Redline ATF. Anyone with experience on whether the Redline is the way to go and if so, which Redline are you using? Their D4, Synthetic or High Temp. Thanks. |

if its an old unit dont waste your money, the material the paper on the clutches are made of is different than they use today, just use a quality dextron 111 you need the bite -- if the units a newer rebuild than for sure swap it out for the syn Mobil 1 but we have found some units slide even with the newer chutches with it, as it thins easier and is slippery, than regular dextron 111 - plus 150,000 mile oil pumps 2 of them in the trans, is loose and pressures are not exact through out the entire RPM range causing different type shifts 1/2 2/3 no matter what you do with the modulator ( How firm ) or the boden cable ( when it shifts ) -- jz

This is also something that I have been wondering about since my 190E is coming due for a change this Spring. I've been thinking about using Mobil 1 as it says it is Dexron VI, which supersedes all previous Dexron ratings according to them. My owner's manual recommends Dexron III but seeing as how that was printed nearly 17 years ago I don't even know if you can buy that anymore.
What about the MB brand available at the dealership? Will that work in the older transmissions or is that only for the newer vehicles? I'll probably end up checking with a service advisor to see what they would put in if I would have them do it at the MB dealer. I'll post his response. |

the new type fluid from benz is a modified dextron 111 >( dextron 111 H ) and is 15 bucks retail per lt = around 1.3 quarts - your car should use the regular type dextron 111 and yes its the most common fluid sold in the USA - jz |

Use exactly what Mercedes recommends in the owners manual and don't try to reinvent the wheel. You'll be much happier in the long run.

Anyone know what brands offer Dexron III and where I can get it?

I've had excellent results using the Valvoline Dexron VI Synthetic available at NAPA. Its not that expensive and the trannys seem to love it. I have it in all of our MB's currently....
I wouldn't use the Mobil 1 stuff, they changed it from what it used to be...and its ultra expensive ($7.60+ a qt here!) and smells weird....

Well I finally got a response from the service guy at the local MB dealer. He obviously didn't want to spend time talking to me about this issue but after being very persistent I finally got an answer out of him. If I were to bring my '92 190E in for service they would use Mobil ATF D/M (non-synthetic.) The cost would be $270+tax.

I should also add that my owner's manual states that Dexron II, not Dexron III, should be used.

Dexron III replaced Dexron II.
I used Dexron III on 2 190E. No problem at all. |

Trans fluid change is a really simple DIY job.
Easily under $100 for everything. Dexron 2 fluid is replaced by Dexron VI.
