Exclamation 1993 190e 2.3 Dash Lights out

Hi All,

All of my dashboard lights are out on my 93 2.3 190e...the odometer lights out along with all of the dash heater and window lights are out. It seems like this must be all one one relay, fuse or ? I assume the fuses are okay as the owner mentioned he had the problem. I would guess he checked the fuses. Does anyone know what usually causes this? Is there any troubleshooting I can try?

Thanks!

I was thinking that but i thought maybe it was something more centralized since ALL of the dash lights including climate control and gear shift area lights don't work

Wiggle the dash light switch. It's the other knob that looks like your trip meter reset. Sometimes that could be in the dim position and sometimes the potentiometer has a bad contact or is on its way out.

Rheostat

Correct. That other knob that looks like your trip odometer reset knob is the rheostat(dimmer switch). If your's is not on it's lowest setting, then it has failed. Some have removed theirs and soldered a wire between the two contacts. So as not to have a dimmer choice at all. Best to just replace it.
This involves pulling the instrument cluster out, removing a phillips screw that secures the rheostat, and installing another.

Thanks all for your responses. I tried playing with that dimmer nob, but still no go. Anything else this may be? Is there a relay or fuse these lights work on?

My diagnostic tree usually includes "start with the cheap stuff first" . . . go get an ohmmeter and check the notorious torpedo fuses in the fuse box under the hood. Don't rely on visual inspection, since those aluminum strips are deceptive, check for continuity.
