You should have the drain plug on a '97.

My upshifts are not rough, but the 2 -> 3 shift occasionally flares if you really jump on it. It only occurs when hot after extended driving. I am not the original owner but have 2 receipts for prior tranny fluid/filter services. Car has just under 180,000 miles but otherwise runs as new.

There are many springs that control various shifting tasks. The 2 -> 3 itself has three separate springs. See diagram.
When you do change the fluid the next time, just check them one at a time. |

That pretty much covers it. Takes about 5-10 seconds and there is perhaps a pint of fluid remaining in the pan when done. Probably the best way for a DIY to flush the trans would be to pump it dry, shut off the car, add a liter of ATF, start the car. Repeat until the ATF being dumped into the catch pan becomes sufficiently clean for your tastes. The difference between old and new fluid is rather obvious - the new stuff is cherry red, the old is brown/black due to the suspended graphite from the clutch material.
