S420 Timing chain 97'
I have a 97' S420 with 167K that I believe had the timing chain jump. Is this engine an interference type? Do I have any valves left or a bunch of really neat paperweights now?
I randomly checked #2 cylinder last night and found no compression. Is the timing chain on this engine one really long chain for the entire valve train? Is it possible on the S420 to have the timing skip just a few degrees and not bend all the valves? I plan on taking it apart more tonight to see where I stand. Thanks for any thoughts with this. |

why timing chain? It seems you can still start the engine yes?

No it does not run now, had to have it towed to the house. checked fuel pressure and ignition, both seem to be ok......

Yes, the m119 is an interference type engine. If you only skipped one tooth or so, then you're still good and won't have a bunch of paperweights. And yes, the timing chain is one big long chain that goes to all 4 cams. What makes you think you jumped timing? What happened when the car gave out? No compression in #2 is concerning...

there is most certainly something going on here....hmmm...yeah, I think it is an 'interference' engine for sure....

I finally managed to get the heads off the engine and the chain did break.
3 seperate cylinders hit the intake valves and cracked the respective lifters in the process. So I'm at 6 valves, 6 lifters, and one timing chain. Has anyone removed the oil pump chain on one of these? I have the front cover partially off but it appears the the oil pump chain must come off first. Do I have to drop the oil pan to do this? I'm concerned that when the timing chain broke and wound up around the crankshaft it might have damaged the oil pump chain as well. At this rate I will have the entire engine out of the car soon! |

Hey, only 6 out of 32 isn't too bad! I'm pretty sure the oil chain and pump need to come out to take off the timing cover. What I'm positive about is that you need to partially drop down the oil sump to get the timing cover off. yuck. Check out this link, it may be helpful:

Maybe Bernards excellent photo documentation on rebuilding a 6.0 M119 will
give some clues; http://community.forenshop.net/forums/index.php?mforum=W140&showtopic=4181 br, syljua

Has anyone ever set up the camshafts and crank without using special tooling? I have the repaired heads back on the engine and the new chain routed in place and am trying to figure out howto set the crankshaft to the camshafts.
Thanks for all the help so far, it's been a huge help. |
