722.309 transmission question
The transmission I'm replacing in my 81 300SD has a case stamping of 722.309. The only info I found on this transmission related it to a 280E. The tail housing is set up for an inductive speedo cable so I imagine it's been reworked.
Can anyone provide more info on the applications of the 722.309 such as years and models? I suppose it should be of some consolation that I'm replacing it with a 722.315 transmission out of a W126 SD. My info is that this transmission is originally out of a W123 turbodiesel. It has a tail housing set up for an inductive speedo cable, of course Thanks, Sixto |

Go to www.transonline.com - then total tech database. There is some good info about the transmissions including model/year data.

722 trans application
722.315 units, according to my information, are found in 81 thru 85 300D, CD,SD,S,and C vehicles. 722.309 units are found in 81 thru 83 300SD,2 . The 722.3 or .4 numbers are required when ordering parts for the trans and identifying the vacuum modulator and modulator pressure adjustment. I would not reccomend installing anything other than the correct unit for your application as the govenor valves and control valve bodies are calibration sensitive to specific engine, axle ratio and tire size......Be careful ! Good luck Gerald@ATSG

Edge, you do have a beautiful coupe. If it was mine I would start on the 4 speed now. However, since that is not the way you are leaning, I think to plug in a slightly mismatched transmission would be OK for someone who has no ability to do it better. Now if you can go for something better, then get a quality rebuilt from some major Mercedes Rebuilder. I think Sun Valley is a good one, there probably are others, I don't know if Metric Motors does transmissions, probably does. But I would have that thing pulled out and get a quality transmission put in and be done with it. Service it yearly, put the best fluid in it and for moderate driving should never need to be replaced for many, many years.
