To diesel or not to diesel?

I am trying to decide between two cars that have found, and not looked at yet. Both are for under a grand. The first is a 78 300D 123 that has 135K and the owner claims to have taken good care of it. The second is a 66 200 4-cyl that the owner claims only has 80K on it but it was missing the head when he bought it 2 years ago. Since he has found a head, had new valves put in, and all the extra parts. He just doesn't have time to work on this car.
I have only seen pictures of these cars and the 66 looks to be in better condition (he claims no rust anywhere). I don't have a lot of money to throw at an extra car right now but I really want a project. Does anyone have any suggestions about which one they would get?
