W126 suspension questions

Front:

What is the purpose of the complex guide rod mounting on a W126? What force or vibration is isolated from the rest of the car by those huge bushings?

On a W123, the guide rod ball joint attaches to a bracket welded to the frame. Seems to do as good a job.

Rear:

Are there bushings between the differential and the subframe? I don't think so but it's not very clear in the CD manual. Looks to me that the rear subframe attachment to the frame is through the differential. Can someone confirm?
