W124 Need a Spare Ignition Key

So... I call my local MB dealer and they can get me a spare ignition key for $30.

I have to bring ID and the car registration to them to get the ball rolling. When the key arrives I also am required to bring my car to the dealer so that they can verify it works. This all sounds reasonable.

But is there an easier way to get a key and avoid the Gestapo like procedure? My local hardware store and key shops say they can't do it, sooo, I guess I'll have to go to MB???

ALSO, I've only had this car a week and it came with one black flat MB key. How do I know if this car has an electric key entry system? I don't have fob or anything. Can I tell from the VIN?

yes, call the classic center, give them your vin and a credit card number. They charge 15$.

The dealers have to be very careful about helping you steal a car.

The W124 cars have an active alarm system activated by the front door locks. I disconnected the alarm horn under the hood near the ignition coil. I like my machinery to only speak when spoken to.

Your car doesn't have an electric key system.

The security isssue is the result of some "parts" people ordering keys and remotes and cars were stolen off driveways and parking lots. MB cracked down with severe penalties.

Hi cth,

The Classic Center told me I had to go through my local MB dealer.

But they did send me a nice jpg copy of my VIN data decoded.
