Also, if I can't use the differential, what should I use in order to put the car on jack stands?

I lifted 123's quite a lot via the differential with no ill effects that I have ever been aware of.
On a 123 car you can lift by the front crossmember and the diff and be okay. It's always safest, but more work, to lift each corner by the lower control arm at each corner.
