What the heck is this?

I was digging around on the passenger side floor of my '83 300SD and I found this (no, not the green vacuum line plug or the plastic thumbtack or the little brass bowtie, I'm talking about the black wire which looks like a radio antenna wire, though I doubt that's what it is since my electric antenna motor works fine and the reception seems to get better when it's up).

Could that be the cable for the Reims Adapter IV (short wave radio)?

Look up your VIN# on the Russian VIN site and see if it lists the Reims adapter. Just a guess.

Maybe the car at one stage had the old car mounted cellular phone with a rear mounted glass antenna.

Ahh yes I can see it now - "Smokey and the Bandit" instead of a Trans Am they could have used a 77 240D

Now that's a funny visual! Inching away from their latest caper in a cloud of diesel fumes! LOL

Where is the other end of the cable? Is this the end that would hook up to the radio? Did it use the same radio antenna? Is it compatible with modern equipment? Oh crap, I'm starting to get ideas...

I wonder where they mounted it. I had one in my van and liked it. I could never find a good place to mount a CB in the W126.

I remember a car audio shop I worked in during the late 70's that stocked those flashy chrome-faced CB radios alongside 8-track players! Man! Those were the days!!!

I'll bet truckers were relieved that when the fad was over, so us neophytes would stop clogging the airwaves trying to emulate them!
