Unhappy HELP!!! 450 SEL won't move!

I was driving to the bank, and for some odd reason, my 1-2 shift got nice and normal, then rounding a corner, it downshifted to first like it should, then when it was time to up shift it revved to the top and that was it. No reverse, no forward gears, not even a park engagement. Flexdisks are ok, and fluid level is good and fluid is nice and red and smells fresh.

Torque converter? There's also a grumbling sound now that was not there prior to the flare.
I don't even have the car paid for yet

EDIT: I did drive thru a huge puddle minutes before this happened.

Wow, the park pawl won't even engage??

Did the linkage fall off and leave you in neutral??

(Yes, I know that is a ludicrous suggestion, but......)

Occasionally the ludicrous option is the only right option.

Stranger things have happened to me during all my years under the hood.

I'm assuming that the parking pawl didn't engage because I was just rolling forward in park VERY slowly as i came to a stop. with engine still running. i'll have to give it a shove in park to see.

First thing I checked was the flex discs, because of the new noise. but yeah, I shut it off while I panicked for a few minutes and started it back up and still nothing.

is there anything inside the tail half of the transmission that could break free and allow the transmission to operate but not transmit the power to the output shaft? I had no slip issues, but had been battling hard long shifts with no change in modulation adjustments.

Does the shifter feel normal? I would check the shifter linkages....and anything else possible to search for a cause.

the linkages feel fine. it failed in drive just as the transmission would have shifted into second gear. I'll be phoning my mech tomorrow, he put the used tranny in while going inside it and making two trannys int one good (or adequate) one. Hopefully I can get some sort of warranty, as it's not been even 60 days.
