what size socket do I need to remove rear links on w124

On an '87 300e, can anyone confirm that I need a 9 mm 12 point or xln socket to counterhold the screw so I can use a wrench to loosen the bolts on the rear links. I think that is the correct size because the 10mm hex I inserted as a test was too big, and the 8mm hex was too small. Thanks.

I don't remember the size, but a ratcheting box-end (12point) worked great for me.
