There's another possibilty I can think of. If your car originally used R-12 refrigerant, and was converted to use R134a, it could be that it wasn't done right. My first MB, an '83 380 SEL had been converted at some point but the PO had only changed the low side valve, the high side was still for R-12, just a small "valve stem" looking valve with no cap on it. Look closer and see if that's the case on yours. If it is, correcting it is a simple matter of picking up the correct high side valve and screwing it on.

I know that to be the case. I have the high valve fitting. I just cant find where to put it.
