90' 300CE rough idle/missfire
I guess this is another one for Arthur.
Car starts but idles rough and misfires. As soon as I put it in gear it gets rougher and/or dies (turning a steering wheel while in Park or Neutral causes same effect). A new blower motor worked intermittently when problem begun but now not working at all. While engine was running, lifted the hood up, noticed that several continues sparks are going from ignition coil wire to surrounding engine parts. "Recently" (2 years ago) changed voltage regulator after old one completely warned out. Car is not used much. Basically start it to repark once or twice a week for street cleaning.

Are the plugs arching?

Ignition coil wires shouldn't arc to the surrounding engine parts. That is definitely not the normal behavior of a coil or spark plug wire.

Paul, I understand that it is not normal, but what is faulty here?
what needs to be replaced? I did the search prior to posting on similar symptoms but came up with an array of possibilities (OVP, harness, mass sensor, O2, etc.). Unfortunately I am very short on time and money right now to start replacing those one by one. So need to narrow it down as much as possible. Could an arcing wire mean bad insulation? ![]() Brgds. I think it means you have a bad coil wire.

Yes. As Paul S advises, you should replace the wire that's arcing. The arcing means that the spark that the ignition system is looking for from the coil in order to conduct combustion, is partially lost by grounding into the engine block. Hence, incomplete ignition and the misfiring you're experiencing. There may also be other things going on that contribute to your problem, but you can't begin to deal with those until the basics are taken care of.

Ok, seems that I need the more expencive ones (For models still utilizing distributor cap) by Beru. Well... lets see if it works.
Thanks guys

Wires are in but no change
![]() What is the next step guys? Started the car with fresh wires still feel slight misfire but not too bad. Put the car in gear without releasing the break pedal and engine started working rough, almost stalling. So this is same as before symptoms. I can see some very tine arcing in three locations on the ignition coil. Dmitry

Dmitry, what we've been trying to tell you is that electrical arcing in the ignition system points to bad components. Whatever you can see that creates arcing sparks needs to be replaced. At first, it apparently was the coil wire and/or plug wires, and you took care of those. Right? Now it sounds as though the coil itself is suspect. As stated earlier, there may be other things going wrong that affect your idle condition too, but you can't really deal with those until the basic ignition system is in order.

If you are having trouble seeing the arching, or determining where it is arching, spray some water (mist, not a shot) at night with the engine running and you should be able to see.
Now that the wires are good, its gotta be the coil, especially if that's where it is arching.

I assume that this engine is a M103 here.
I haven't seen a post by the OP that actually says that there is arching on the leads. Misfires are 90+ plus electrical. The cheapest tune up and trouble reducing on these cars is replacing leads, plugs, distributor cap and rotor. Do those first. You wont lose on this. Since you have already new Beru leads do the rest. |
