Question 300E transmission cost?

We just had to replace the Transmission on my wife's 99 Cabrio auto due to Firestone carelessness in a drive shaft issue. The care was damaged, so a whole new tranny was installed for $9500 (I am getting used to these high prices on German parts ) ....

What would a new tranny for a 300E 92-93 run? how about a rebuild?

I am just making notes on worst case scenarios, as I want to finalize my decision on "to buy " or not ......

Thanks

i saw the receipt for my tranny change ('99) from the PO and the dealer indicated about $2k although there was nc for the warranty service.

$2K seems "so" reasonable in this case . I wonder if the $7500+$2K core chg were heavily padded by the dealer? Maybe, maybe not, as I called for a used tranny (this is VW Cabrio remember-just the "German" similarities), at a used VW parts place, they quoted me $1K -used.

I don't understand the "Firestone carelessness" reference. Newer Veedubs like your Cab have a 10yr/100k warranty which ought to have covered the tranny unless you did something like throw the car into reverse while it was moving forward. Also, did you consider that $9500 is already about 2/3 the value of the car before you ok'd the repair?

We also rebuild our own transmissions. Typically around $1500 installed and adjusted. We have a whole room full of corse so we never charge more even if large pieces are bad. The get those pices from the cores or we don't rebuild. If we havce one that can't be rebuilt (we won't build one from pieces - too much risk) we get one used.

If it can't be done for that price a MB rebuilt is around 2k (not installed).

steve/mike,
where do you get the valve bodies? are those rebuilt by MB? what do they run? i'm going to have my low revving tranny checked out at a local indy / "MB specialist" and want to know what it could cost up front if they say to replace it.
cheers
