S430 Crank Position Sensor Location
Hi. Happy 4th kickoff to everyone and their families. We have a 2002 S430 and need to locate the CPS. Does anyone have the info. Thanks.

usually its by the crankshaft sprocket so it can pick up the signal

Thanks. What is the crank shaft sprocket? On my 400E its mounted relative to the harmonic balancer as with most older cars Im familiar with. Is that at the rear of the engine where the transmission links with the engine as with the 500?. I think It's there drivers side wired into a harness with two leads but I dont want to guess. Thanks

Peek down between rear of engine and drivers side firewall; its on top of the trans bell housing.

Thanks TM. That's what I thought. Thanks to you too Oracle but i could not tell from the picture. The blow up makes it look like its in the front of the engine. Am I wrong? Also I have read several things about re-indexing. I understand that the car will do that itself over time. The dealer just accelerates that process. Am I correct about this too?.

Why can only the dealer can initialize it but other threads on
another website says that the car will run and over a short period of time will smooth out. Does anyone know conclusively. |

the dealer tool calibrates and setups up the sensor so it can talk to the pcm. Like everything there is the proper way to do something and theres the other way to do it, which most times is wrong. You could just hook it up and let the sensor and pcm learn to talk to each other which will take some time and you will probaly have some running issues.

My partner finished the job a couple of hours ago and there are zero issues on any level. I probably will wait for a reason to take it in as there is none present at this time. The dealer estimate for the job is about $500.00 plus or minus.
part $ 56.00...time start to finish about 55 minutes. |

Yeah...this is kind of like installing a MAF. SDS can re-adapt OR you can drive 50 miles and let the car adapt itself.
Most MB engineered systems do have a "on-board" way to initialize or reset as often times in the middle of the rain forest or the Serengeti SDS isn't handy, yet a repair must be accomplished.
