I put this up as a tip for anyone who might have a similar or the same problem. About 9 months ago half the lights on my dash and console would stay on all the time, even with the light switch off and the key out. Sometimes they would go off, but then come back on overnight. After hunting down the problem, I finally replaced the light control relay behind the instrument cluster (not the big $200 external relay one in the box under the hood). Problem appears to be solved...two days and no errant lights so far. Fingers crossed.

Of course, while the cluster was pulled I replaced by also malfunctioning seat belt relay, and the instrument cluster illumination bulbs. Now everything works...for the moment.
