190e 2.3 ignition switch removal

I've got a 1993 190e 2.3 with 5 speed manual. Nearest M/B dealer says I've
got a rare car. Ignition switch failed and local mechanic has been working on
it for a week. Key will not turn so cannot get to #1 position for removal. He has drilled out tumblers and showed me a new switch and how the U-shaped wire tool fits into the two small holes. He has done this with the old switch (still in the dash) and apparently it is in #1 position in order to line up groove to depress the clip. The tool goes all the way into the old switch and that's as far as he's gotten. The old switch jiggles a bit but will not unscrew with
the wire tool inserted. He is thinking of cutting out the black surround but
then what? Can that piece be replaced so the new switch can fit it in. I've even talked to my local police department to see if they could send me a car thief! I'm in Wisconsin and email is edcarmo@hotmail.com Any help would be appreciated.
