I have an '85 190e and when I received my new(used)autpmatic trans, it had a part number starting with 123 not 201. Isn't 123 the 78-85 300D body style? If they used the same transmission (722.4) then I guess it will work out okay... but is there an internet site that lists Merceds Benz models and their respective transmissions?

Just go to Fast-Lane catalog, click on the vehicle in question, then pick a tranny part. They list the trans # for that model
along with the part you picked.

No, that didn't tell me anything about what tranny I own. I guess my question is: Is it possible that an automatic trans from a 123 body style might fit in a 201? 1985 190e 2.3? They are both 6 bolts but I won't know until I drop the broken one and compare the two. I was really hoping someone could save me the comparison as I only have a limited time to return it.

That tells you that you own and need a 722.400 trans.
The 123 #'s you are looking at are part #'s , not trans #.
So just look at the next series of #s on the used trans you have and it will tell you if it is the same
722. XXX etc.

The numbers on on the case, right side, just above the pan gasket line, far foward .

To add to what Arthur said, the first numbers are the part number followed by the transmission number in the form 722 xxx xx xx xxxx.

If it's any consolation, my 81 SD came with a 722.309 transmission (early 80s 280E). I replaced it with a 722.315 (early 80s 300Dt). These are obviously not the correct transmissions but they were modified or rebuilt to work with my car.

Assuming all physical dimensions and connections are identical (check the speedo drive in particular), that 123 prefix might not be an issue. At least note the numbers from the transmission in your car and insist on a match when you go shopping. Note that the last 4-8 digits of the transmission number might be a unique/unmatchable serial number.

What 6 bolts are you talking about?

The 6 bolts refer to the oil-pan 722.3=large bolts 722.4=small. Some had a four bolt design. I am just a little flustered that a parts locator would tell me he had a tranny for a 190e and it could be from another model. I didn't say "Mercedes-Benz... You pick the model" I am assuming that he checked a computer. I may be getting worried over nothing, but I would sure like to know if I bought a dud. I will check on it tonight.

I am sure the parts people have cross referenced your trans.

It is quite common to see a part # from one chassis that fits another. So to see a 201 part prefix when you ordered a part for a 124 chassis should not be of concern, as there are many interchanges right from the factory.
The concern on many trans is some are 1st gear start and others 2nd. This involves different valve bodies and parts, so that is what you want to know. [ this is not the case with yours as all 722.4 's are 2nd gear start]

A quick inquiry with your parts guy will probably put you at ease.

I just checked the trans and it is a 722.400.
