1985 230ce PURCHASE SOON
My first of many post, I hope... and depanding on your advise.
Subject MB 230ce is for sale, no rust, AC is cold - does not blow, sways hard on curves, transmission jerks noticably going into 2nd and 3rd, sqeeks at front right during norming driving, rain enters through windows - gasket failing (are gaskets available?), paint job has faded on roof and trunk. This is what I experienced while test driving. Seller asking $3,500. Can anyone offer any guidance in helping me offer or paid the fair price? I like the 230 coupe... It's euro and parts/repairs can be difficult and in some cases impossible? This is what I'm told. Does it sound like the tranny is getting ready to go... what about a rebuilt? Can additives save it? or is this normal? What is the estimate cost of tranny replacement? It has 95K on the OD. Any help is appreciated... Thanks |

Wow....$3,500 is about 2,000 too high at least! With all those issues its not remotely worth $3,500. You can get one with little to nothing wrong and in great shape for that price. That is more than I paid for my low miles 1990 300E....and it didn't really have much of anything wrong.

The transmission most likely just needs to be adjusted, and serviced. Those trannys are near bulletproof. I would offer $2,000 and take it from there.

Does it have any rust? Can you work on cars yourself, or prefer to farm them out to mechanics?
If it does have rust, and you don't like getting your hands dirty, then move on, and spend more for a nicer example. You will spend more in the long run, and probably not have one as nice.
