NEW Cat Converter suddenly 'smelly'

Question:

I've recently installed a new OEM cat in my '87 2.3-16, and didn't notice much smell from it at first. However, my tech just bumped up my mixture a bit, and now I can smell myself as I come to a stop or back up on the fumes.

My question is, could this mean I'm running too rich (I know, test it with a meter!) and am burning through the cat, or is this just normal cat smell produced from high speed runs that I hadn't noticed at first?

Say I was running WAY rich and WAS burning the cat, would this be the smell that would result (typical egg / sulfer smell of cats)? Just curious, don't want to fry that $ cat!

Thoughts? Thanks!

THE ROTTON EGG SMELL IS USUALLY CAUSED BY A RICH COND. IN FUEL MIXTURE.
IF YOU KEEP IT TOO RICH TOO LONG YOU'LL BE BUYING ANOTHER CAT.
SINCE YOUR FUEL SYSTEM ALLOWS FULL LOAD ENRICHMENT AT W.O.T. THERE IS NO POINT TO STARTING OUT WITH A RICH MIXTURE.

My diesel (300SD) just started the stinky sulfer smell after a long drive. I belive it is from a stuck voltage regulator boiling the battery.
Have you been loosing light bulbs?
I lost all the bulbs on the back of the car.
Good luck.

Check your engine compartment for rodent nests. THey will make a terrible smell when burned.

no question, rotten egg smell =running too rich.why was mixture fattened up? was it to cover a vacuum leak and gain a smooth idle?you need to lean it down go to indie with 5 gas analyser or some one with the use of inspection machine.
