Catalytic converter warranty 01 E320 Wagon

So i got a bad cat. converter. Sounds likes rocks in the muffler. Had an independent mechanic verify as well.

I have 80,390 on the OD. Production date was 01/01/01. So I am only about 400 miles over the warranty.

Had my mechanic call a dealership and they said not covered. What are my chances at calling MB corporate and get this overided. Its the right rear.

Just wondering if anyone else had luck getting this covered with this close to the mileage warranty.

Never fails....as soon as the warranty goes.......

thanks

I doubt they will replace them for you (free of charge that is). You can install aftermarket cats, they are really inexpensive. Almost any muffler shop can do the work relatively cheap.

Funny that I see this post, I just removed the cats of my E420 (1994). There is nothing wrong with them, I just replaced them with a magnaflow cat (it weights less than half). The resonator was also replaced.

Any way, I will be selling them to see how much I can get for them.

If you will only be using the car off road simply remove the afflicted headpipe including cats and use a long hydraulic jack handle or similar solid tool and hammer to pound the cat bed out of the cat. You may as well do it to the other side because it will occur on that side too. Both O2 sensors are before the secondary cats so OBDII won't know the difference. IMO $1,100 or so for each headpipe is robbery. Mark

USA emissions warranty on that ends at 80,001 & MB doesn't extend that warranty.

Use a MB OE catalyst unless you want the check engine light on ALL of the time.

Not to mention his 8 years were up on 1/1/09, so the mileage wouldn't make a difference.

Timely thread as I'm about to get both cats replaced on our 99 wagon. After much reading I'm biting the bullet and going with OEM replacements.......big dollars. We plan on keeping the car indefinitely as its been good to us, and we want to make sure we don't have recurring problems that could come with a universal replacement.

My question is whether the used CATS have any real scrap value due the platinum and palladium in them, and should I be taking possession of them upon removal?

By all means keep them.

I have heard you can get up to 90.00 per cat (as long as it is the original, and depending on year and model).

I am trying to find scrap yards in my area to see how much they will pay for mine.

I expect to recoup about 50% of what I paid for the work done on my exhaust.

It's NOT production date, it's date of first sale.

Note that OE cats are designed to last 8-yrs/80K miles and aftermarket cats are very much not ... both the price and the construction are "cheap," as is usually the case.

so how long can i let it go?

i only occasionally hear it - actually hardly ever. So i don't think it is too bad yet - and only on one side.

I dont have 1K sitting around so just trying to wait awhile.

thanks.

My cat replacement was only 65.00.

I got 120.00 for the original cat at the recycler, paid for half of the work done on the car.

I wrote a very convincing letter to the dealer service manager and they replaced my converter and related parts with me paying $364.00, plus a not cost loaner MB for the day. Dennis
