That would be the temp sensor for the instrument cluster. The one at the very back is for the CIS. The second one is for cluster only.

Warren, your description is a bit cryptic. Is the part located toward the front or rear of the engine block? You describe the part as having "2 lines going into it." That leads me to believe that these lines are not electrical wires, but tubes perhaps. Is that what you mean? Everything at the back of the engine has electrical wires attached to it, and they're mostly temperature sensors. At the front is a part called thermo vacuum valve, which has two rubber elbows connected to it, that are fitted to two plastic tubes. Providing a photo would clarify things.

Sorry i was not more descriptive...dirty hands!! It is the one with the 2 rubber elbows. One tube was open, the rubber part broken off, just sitting on top looking like it was connected. Would this be part of my idle problems?
Thanks Warren |

That thermo valve is for fuel vapor purging. According to Steve Brotherton, this valve, which is closed below 50deg C, transmits vacuum at all throttle positions above idle to the purge valve which allows fuel vapors which have collected in the charcoal canister to be pulled with air into the intake for burning. The thermo valve is a temperature controlled on/off switch to the purge vacuum control signal. Its conceivable that an unpurged charcoal cannister could reach its dew point and leak raw fuel. Probably would be so slight that all that would be noticed would be the fuel smell (which is the purpose of the system in the first place).
