Post How to roll back a w126 odometer?

I've gotten a replacement speedometer/odometer gauge for my 84 500sel, and it reads about 30k more miles than what my car has on it. I was wondering if there is a way to roll back the replacement odometer mileage to that of my car's without breaking any of its fragile gears?

Hey I dated a girl this year who asked me in ALL seriousness, why would someone BRAG about having high mileage on their car?

Long story short: She never paid back a DIME for this lovely 1990 Smoke Silver lifetime So Cal 90k miles 560SEC from Malibu CA I bought for her in May, though she continues to drive it, and I want it back!!

We are (obviously) not dating anymore... either.

If you open the spedometer, you will see how easy it is to do. I have had to make several adjustments due to speedometers failing and of course replacing those 3 gears that turn to jelly after 20 years. Making an adjustment to keep things accurate should not be a problem legally.

When I replaced the odometers in the gray market cars I was federalizing, there was a form and a sticker that was applied with the old and new odo mileage. But that was California - where upon this planet do you reside?? Fill out your profile!!

Yea, I don't see why its illegal to roll the replacement odometer back to what my car's mileage legally is- if anything I'd think it'd be illegal to get a replacement odometer without matching up the mileages. I have the speedometer in front of me, but do I have to take the face off of it before I can adjust the mileage?

What makes the rollback illegal is the intent to misrepresent the actual mileage of the car.

The bottom line is the criminal intent (fraud) to present the car as "newer" with a rolled back odometer.

IF you are backrolling to represent the actual mileage of the vehicle, I just do not see how it is illegal.

But I am no lawyer, my brother in law is.

This is just my opinion, do not take it as legal advice.
