Rattling/bumping from rear.

87 SDL

It sounds exactly like an exhaust rattling against the frame (middle/right rear) over bumps and rough roads. Shocks/tires/alignment are new, exhaust is solidly hung . I checked behind/under the rear seat when I installed the shocks. This car sits level, tracks straight, it seems as solid as a brick feceshouse (new family friendly term coined just for this). I've gutted the trunk and removed the taillights looking for anything loose at all.

I have been under this car about 600 times in the last few months and I absolutly cannot find anything loose.

I cant be the only one to have been down this road with a 126. Anyone have any ideas what it could be? I would LOVE to hear any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know about your car, but my '82 300D has a sway bar, and on each end there's a little link about 7" long that goes from the sway bar down to the axle housing. They develop play in the pivots and make all kinds of nasty noises. Cheap to replace, though!

I tugged on them before and they felt tight, its time to get it off the ground and check into it.

I see the parts are very reasonable to purchase, Im goign to swap them out just on principal, although they feel snug there really is nothing else there that could be responsible for this noise.

Are they a PITA to replace, special tools?

Thank you for the response.

I replaced the rear sway links, that was the noise, its so much quieter now I can hear a similiar noise from the front but much quieter.
