My first long distance trip with the 1996 E320

I've just had a trip Dallas - San Antonio - Houston - Galveston - Houston - Dallas with 1051 miles including 100+/- miles city driving.

The car runs great for its 12 years of age. I can't complain about the fuel economy at all. Total gas comsumption was 40 gallons, thus a gas mileage of 26 mpg.

Before the trip I wanted to replace the spark plugs, cables and ingnition coils, hoping for better gas mileage but did not manage. Now I think it cannot be improved much. The gas mileage I am having is even specified for new cars of that model year.

One thing is to be mentioned though; a few days before I added cerma liquid ceramic Cerma Organic to engine oil and noticed smoother idle. Maybe there was some benefits from that product, which David Poole of European Performance in Dallas recommended to me. I'd like to hear your opinion about that too, before using it for transmission, differentials and power steering.

Don't bother with additives. Just use good synthetic oil, like Mobil 1.

When I had my 1993 300E (3.2) "E320", I had several all freeway jaunts to Las Vegas, and I regularly got 26 mpg.

26 sounds right for mixed, mostly freeway driving. If I run a tank of gas strictly freeway, it's usually 28-30mpg. Strictly city is usually 22-24.

How many miles are on the car?

The car has now 135K. In mixed driving 35% city and 65% highway I got only 20-21 mpg.

I have experienced similar results in my 96 E320.

I consistently get 19-20 mpg in all-city driving in my 97 E320. Not bad for a full-sized sedan of this calibre if you ask me. I've never taken it on an all-highway trip; it's good to know I'd be pushing the mid- to upper- twenties.

I've never heard of Cerma before. If it makes a car idle that quietly, that IS impressive. That sounds impressive in and of itself. If it improves mileage, that's a bonus, it would seem to me.

David Poole is a crook and I woild not believe a thing he says. My 190 was stalling out. I suggested a fuel pump problem. I was told that I knew nothing that fuel pumps on Mercedes seldom if ever went bad. After selling me ignition wires fuel filters battery and several hundred dollars. You got it, it was the pumps. David had done other work on my car that failed with the results of 150.00 tow from bf egypt to another shop that resulted in all of his bypassed wiring jobs and other incomplerte work being found to the tune of about 1000.00.Stay away from this guy and his shop European Preformance. Wow, David has some 1500+ posts and you dig up a post from a year and a half ago...to respond to. You failed to mention how, and, if you tried to resolve your issues with Mr. Poole.

id you contact Mr.Poole and express your lack of satisfaction? Wanna bet there's more to this story than John Hancock's version?

I am sorry to hear about your mishap. Personally I have had good experience with David.

Ignoring the rant and getting back to the actual contents of the old thread, does anybody have any long term experience now that this product has been around for a year?

Anybody remember the original claims from the slick-50 people? That those little bits of teflon would somehow bond to the metal of the motor and do good?

On the whole, slick-50 reduces oil flow through the filter. It's bad stuff in the long run. The interesting thing is that a google search for slick-50 points that out on the 3rd post down (while the rest of the top 10 seem to be from the manufacturer).

With this cerma product, it took several pages of google results before I found this one...

http://www.craftkb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/metalworking/19540/Question-on-oil-additive

The thread starts off saying "it's probably snake oil", before some product selling types start to go on about what it does. Then the teckies (these are people that deal with metal for their livelyhood) get on their case.

I have to say from what I see (and what I don't see), this product is snake oil.

Charlie,

I put it in my Minosota 6.9 and had it in there for more then a year with no negative effects. The 6.9 engine did run quieter when I put this stuff in so I can definitely speak to that. They have a new website which has a little more detail called Ceramic Performance
