Chaps,

Yesterday, after filling up my car's gas tank, it was half full, I removed the nozzle and gasoline started coming off the filler neck. I put the cap back, started the engine, let it run for a few seconds and turned it off.

I opened the gas cap and a stream of fuel came out. I immediately closed it and went to the local MB dealer. The shop foreman told me that it was the roll-over pump or valve that will shut off the fuel pump in case the car rolls over.

The gas tank has to be emptied and the pump/valve replaced which is labor intensive - about 10 hours.

I checked the EPC fuel system section and the only valve I found is a VENT VALVE [parts 2014760132 and 1244760432].

I still cannot figure it out, is the shop foreman right?

Please advise.

It's just a one way check valve. very simple job actually. Book says 10 hours, so that's what he told you. Truth is, it can bbe done in a few short hours, by any half decent mechanic who knows how to drop a tank and owns a screw driver.... Try some other shops and see who will do it for less labor time. Dealership will try to screw you every chance they get.

K, I have two questions.

1. how would a faulty roll over valve CAUSE fuel to spill out? typically, a tripped valve or sensor would prevent the car from running.

It is the Russian EPC, I have it bookmarked and it is free, always accessible in a second without the need of a user ID and password unlike the factory EPC which is a pain in the neck and you have to pay a subscription fee.
