Trip Meter Problem
92 300e 2.6
My odometer works fine, but my trip meter is stuck. Noticed that it tries to move, then clicks back to last number, and as it does that the speedo needle jiggles. Weird. Oh, and the cruise control is jerky, which I've read could be the cruise control amp or maybe have something to do with the gauge problem. It was like this when I bought the car. Any suggestions? Speedo cable, remove and repair gauges, buy new gauges? |

I would just like to chime in and say I have the EXACT same problem. With my car, somewhere between the initial test drive and the pre-purchase inspection, the trip odometer stopped working. I would guess somebody tried to reset it while it was in motion.
Every tenth of a mile, it clicks, and the speedo jumps at that exact time (~1-2 mph). The path I'll probably take is to have the odometer repaired at a VDO shop. That clicking can't be good for the rest of the internals. I've often read that the odometer may follow a broken trip odometer. My cruise control is inoperable, so, I can't relate to you there. But, if the cruise control jerks at that same moment as the speedo, I would think it might be related. Having the odometer repaired would be my first step. Good luck, and I'll be watching this thread ![]()

Try the reset button a couple of times, make sure it is popping back out, do this with the car stopped.

I had this when the car was new to me.. I found it took a few jabs to reset to zero in a way that it would spin again.. Lately, one jab will do it. Sort of self corrected. Pretty sure this is lubrication related. I find quick sharp jabs better than sluggish pushes on the button work better. Not crazy hard jabs, just quick ones. I found it was actually necessary to do this while driving to get it to synch up again, but now I can do it at the fuel stop. It sort of worked itself out count me lucky I guess.
I have a cluster apart on my bench and I'll be taking my daily driver's out to give it better gauge illumination today. I might give a shot of graphite or two in some areas, or lithium grease, or whatever else seems to be used in the critical areas.
