AC compressor clutch draws 20-amps, 5X spec

Hello from the Diesel side of the tracks.

My 87 300D keeps blowing fuse 7 (ACC). I traced it to the (ND) compressor clutch drawing about 20-amps. FSM says it should be 4.20-amps cold, 3.75-amps hot. Ha! AC cools as it always has with 20-amps to the clutch.

I don't hear of this being a common issue so I plan to head to the PnP for a clutch off a 300E. The FSM makes it sound easy except for "On vehicles with 6-cylinder engines remove A/C compressor." Uh, I'm gonna try in-situ first. I'm not giving up the R-12 in there. Anything I should know about this job beyond what's in the FSM?

Thanks,
Sixto
87 300D

I'd try just the clutch...ON the car....also if necessary remove the radiator to do the job.

Better to renew the coolant & not have to discharge & re-charge the R12.
