Came across a "1983" amg 500 sec

I need some help figuring out if it is a real AMG and if it really is a 1983. The body kit looks authentic but it has cracks and stuff. Interior is real clean and nice black. Exterior is also black.

Here is the vin number
wdb12604412005967 if this can help get some more info about the car.

I don't want to make a financial mistake.

Thanks in advance.

You're thinking of buying a 26 year old German car as an investment? And people say I'm not right in the head

What is the seller asking?

Hey, you never know. In another 50 years it might be a real collector's item.

Just look at what restored chevelle's are bringing in these days...

Datacard for VIN wdb12604412005967 is not found
1) VIN was misspelled in the request form;
2) VIN was erroneously read from vehicle body or documents;
3) VIN is not of an original vehicle and was forged by criminals;

I've seen more than one example of the russian site not recognizing a valid VIN. Of course, other VIN checkers are having a problem with it, too.

I'd call the mercedes classic center for more info. This is a USA car, correct?

The VIN, once working, will tell you what Mercedes did to the car, not AMG. Unless the seller has documentation, verifying the AMG tuning will have to be done on your own, since there isn't much in the way of records for the pre-merger cars.

Body parts (Aero Kit) will have AMG logos and part numbers molded into them and will not be fiberglass, it should be a flexible PUR plastic.

If you're really lucky and the car was engine tuned in Affalterbach, there should be an AMG engine number stamp on the block.

There is also the possibility that AMG tuning was done by an authorized center in the US.

There's gonna need to be a plate or a sticker somwhere indicating the car actually at one time visited AMG. Otherwise, anybody can tack on some stuff and call it an AMG.

The VIN that only has a 3 alpha prefix would suggest it's not North American, but likely gray market.

Kent, if the car was tuned at a US AMG center, say in CA. IL or possibly Canada, there might not be a sticker or plate. Also, engine tuning was not required back then to qualify for the badging.

A Vin# beginning with WDBCA is a US spec auto.

A Vin# beginning with WDB is a euro car.

From the information provided there is no way to determine whether the car is a real pre-merger AMG car without actual records, or AMG build plates/stickers affixed to the car, showing the car was tweaked by AMG either at Affalterbach or an American premerger facility in Westmont Ill, Florida, St Louis, Beverly Hills Motoring, AMG West in Richmond CA, etc.

All factory AMG pre merger records afre gone, and only AMG West in Richmond CA survives to this day.

AMG markings can be found on the back of pre merger 126 body kits, and the front spoilers,( <---- usually damaged from parking lot and curbing abuse),on Penta wheels, and when opening up the engine through its valve covers, etc.
