I have the 2 diagnostics come up for my '97 c280:
PO170 - fuel trim malfunction (bank 1) & PO700 - transmission control system malfunction. just hoping for advise on how to proceed w/ repairs. also, is there a way to add trans. fluid w/out going to mercedes dealer as it say on cap? any direction would be appreciated. |

P0 170 means that the engine computer isn't able to abjust the fuel mixture due to information from the various sensors.
Most likely causes are vacuum leaks, incorrect fuel pressure, OR a bad air mass flow sensor. P0 700 is a generic engine code that suggests reading the codes from the TRANS computer, MB scanner required. Yes you can & should service that trans.

Try searching this forum for "trans dipstick" . MB offers it as a "special tool".

Your's ought to have the 722.6 trans which also requires a special fluid.

P0170 is commonly the Mass air flow sensor but this part is not cheap so check the others things first as MB DOC suggests. You can save some money by just buying the insert rather than the whole thing but some have had problems trying this. IIRC you'll need torx bit to get it off. You can see what the entire thing looks like at FastLane or get an insert from ebay.
You really can't just add ATF with the 722.6 tranny. The correct level is important. You'll need to buy a measuring dipstick. You'll also need special MBZ fluid. Car needs to be at operating temp. Carefully remove anti-tamper clip from cap. Add fluid until you get to the correct level on the dip stick. Add slowly unless you have an easy way to take out extra fluid like a Topsider oil vacumn. glenmore 1991 300CE 2000 C280 |
