Removing main shaft on odometer?

Do the later model odometers have the ability to have the main shaft removed?

I wish to remove it so I don't have to get my broken one repaired as one I found at the junkyard works great, but it has 260k on it so I need to roll it back to 85k to match my 260E's actual mileage.

I tried pushing a thin screwdriver though and it doesn't seem to budge even with a good hit as well.

Anybody removed one?
