Not sure if your 400E has the same design as my 190E, but removing that water pump was a nightmare (but then again, it was my first task ever performed on my car, and I had no idea what I was doing) But heres what I remember: Loosen up the belt and remove that, obviously as step one. 2) have a pan or something handy, large enough to catch the coolant as it will need to be drained (also, while you are doing the water pump, I suggest taking care of all seals and gaskets, ie, timing cover, power steering, etc, and flush your radiator as well and replace the thermostat in the housing) 3) disassemble the top bar holding the ratiator and disconnect the hoses as the radiator will need to be removed so you can access the water pump (now, at this point I believe my radiator was connected to an A/C line or something because I remember draining all the freon out and disconnecting that ass well, but like I said, I had no idea what I was doing at the time, so double check) 4) Next you remove the fan blade, via the 3 small nuts holding it in place. 5)you should now be able to access your water pump. I believe there was 4 nuts holding it in place and one long bolt that ran through the middle. This is what I remember and this was my process and removing mine, however, I did not do ANY of the aforementioned premaintenance like the gaskets and seals, as I did not possess the knowledge then as I do now. But please check with other forum members as well because I am only a novice at automotive repairs. Hope this helps....also becareful with the bolts when remving, use penetrating oil if necessary to loosen them up, the last thing you wanna do is snap off a few bolts......and please take pictures!
