Another tranny question, this time about parts (190E)

Hi again.

So, it looks like I'm in the market for a replacement transmission for my wonderful '91 190E 2.6L.

I found a deal on Craigslist for one in supposedly decent working condition. The mileage is comparable to those found at the salvage places, and the price is significantly cheaper, $400+ cheaper. The only problem: the transmission is coming out of a '90 300TE (E-class hatchback/wagon).

I did some research, and they both have an M103 engine, although I do not know if the 300TE has a 2.6L or a 3.0L, although I suspect it is a 3.0L. I do not know the part numbers on either of these transmissions, nor can I seem to find them. My guess is that they are extremely similar, but not identical???

My questions (this will show my utter newness to working on my car): does anyone one know if this transmission would be a good fit between the two vehicles? Could I obtain this transmission and easily modify it, if necessary? How would I need to modify it? What are the possible future problems associated with this type of switch?

Even better: either the part numbers for these trannies, or a reference to look up the part numbers.

Thanks^100

Most likely they will swap straight away ,both being a 103 transmissions. Do check the acquired one is backed up as being in working condition.

if i were in your spot i would take the unit and go around to the somewhat local shops and bid the unit out

the normal kit price is around 250 to buy

being my guess you are a girl who has spunk and the want to learn about your new LOVE hahahahhaha

anyway you could do this take the unit to a few shops that have the ability to re do it and tell them you have a cousin in jersey who own a trans shop and he has you pricing out shops so you wont go broke getting it back together again

if you are doing it yourself and have taken the trans out you will know the nuts and bolts so to speak, i know in my shop we would help you out - because -- it happened a few times and one of the times, a very well dressed young lady showed up with a BMW trans in the trunk of another car, and was pricing us, and when i questioned her she knew what she was talking about ( TAKEN back by this ) we did the unit at the price we do for other shops it runs around 2/3rds of that retail is

if you catch someone and they what to know about the shop helping you i can step in and help be glad too -- good luck -- jz

Thumbs up trans change out

The trans from the 300TE will work, provided it's not a 4 matic (4 wheel drive) version.

The part numbers of the transmissions are located on the drivers side trans rail, just above the pan.

Make sure you replace the front seal where the torque converter slips in...the rear seal is a bit more difficult but I would recommend replacing it as well, you can get a deep-well 30mm socket from Autozone, for around $7 to remove the rear yoke where the flex disc bolts to the rear of the trans.

The 2.6 and 3.0 share the same block/trans bolt pattern, as well as the 2.5 and 3.0 diesel block/trans bolt pattern.

Good luck on the swap, and Merry Christmas.

The transmission on a 260e is different than a 300e. Depending on the market. Most Euro and eastern export 260e's don't have a S - E switch.

However you should be able to use the 300e one O.K.

I replaced the transmission on my W124 260e with a unit from a 190e 2.6.

we really didn't have that in the US, so it doesn't apply.

all m102, m103, m104,m111, OM602 and om603 engine blocks have the same bellhousing. which makes finding a replacement transmission very easy. i have an 87 diesel transmission in my 92 gasser coupe and i'm converting it to a 5 speed manual this winter! you gotta love options!
