ASR & ABS come and go at same time

96 SL500: the ASR & ABS lights come on after a few minutes of running the engine cold and hot. If you turn off the car and turn it on twice it goes away. on the second restart, Both lights come on again together! The car has no driveability issues runs great. I have seen similar post on earlier models with the bad harness issues, but this was suposedly corrected with this 96 model. I have seen posts about the ETA,but this car runs and drives great no limp home mode issues................Puzzled

asr warning

You system requires 13.8 volts at start, anything lower will trigger the warning lights your battery most likely is the culprit, it has enough power to start the engine so it is not normally a suspect, your lights will reset after your alternator brings the voltage up.
my 2 cents

I bet its a brake light switch, even with working brake lights this $160 part failed on my ML430 and crapped out both systems.

I too vote for the brake light switch (above the gas pedal).

$160!! I replaced mine and the one on my friend's ML320 for $15 each.

John, check the ETA wiring to see if it has the brittle insulation problem.

Exclamation Insulation 119 engine

Cut open the eng harnesses around the ETA and the MAF wiring looks beautiful brand new no cracks. I have heard about these brake light switches. It sounds cheaper than the ETA also seen ETA on Ebay for about $300.00,should be easier to change also. Maybe a little contact cleaner on the switch internals may bring the brake light sw back to life...Thanx John
