1994 e320 no reverse after she warms up...

I checked the fluid on the dipstick but to be honest, not really sure how to read the amount. I assume one side is for checking warm and one side for cold? anyway...followed the owners manual and it looks like it has plenty. Looks to be the correct cooler (reddish) and does not smell burned. I am not sure the transmission fluid has been changed since 80k and it has 139k now.

At this mileage am i looking at a tranny rebuild or just a fluid and filter change?

If a tranny rebuild what is a good non dealer price and does anyone have a suggestion for the San Diego area. I've been to see the guy up on Reseda and he's great but it's a bit of a drive now...

My concern is a technical bulletin I found

from another post i just found. I for sure have the chatter in revere in the morning then no reverse in the afternoon when she is warm. I thought the chatter was my brakes calipers binding

If it is, is this difficult to do?

The bullentin you have is for a unit that after a redo has a no reverse issue and it was not found during the overhaul

un like what most think the only time everything is checked and done is if you do it yourself

my guess your trans is not a new redone unit sooo my guess its the piston seals or somthing in that order AND NO its not at home repair -- jz

Most of the info I've read on this symptom (reverse delay) indicates your trans is worn out and in need of rebuild. Not to be contrary to johnjzjz, but this job can be done DIY if you have the time and the inclination and are not afraid of tackling a big job. There are several write-ups on here of guys who have DIY rebuilt their own trans. It takes time and attention to detail and a willingness to learn. The biggest hassle is R&R'ing the trans in and out of the car if you don't have a vehicle lift.

You can get a rebuilt from the factory or from several aftermarket sources. The aftermarket rebuilds are around $1600 exchange (Peter Schmid is one example). That means you have to do the R&R of the trans yourself. If your indy does the R&R, add another $1200 or so for the labor. The last number I heard for a 124 trans R&R is 12 hours. I would budget $3000 out the door.

That's the number I've heard. This would be by professionals in a shop using a vehicle lift and who have done the job several times before so they have the benefit of experience.

Me, it would take two full weekends doing it on the ground...
